Glossary

Omental Cake

In radiology, 'omental cake' is a term used to describe an abnormally thickened appearance of the greater omentum. Typically, it is caused by infiltration of metastatic tumors arising from the stomach, ovary and colon. The appearance can also result due to tuberculous peritonitis.

Omentum

An apronlike double fold of fatty membrane that hangs down in front of the intestines. It contains blood vessels, nerves, lymph vessels and lymph nodes. It acts as storage for fat and also may limit the spread of infection in the abdominal cavity.

Oncologist

A physician who specializes in cancer therapy and handles general medical problems that arise during the disease.

Oophorectomy

Surgery intended to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by removing the ovaries before disease develops.

Ovarian Cancer

A disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the ovaries.

Ovaries

The ovaries are a pair of organs in the female reproductive system. They are in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus (the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a fetus grows). Each ovary is about the size and shape of an almond. The ovaries make eggs and female hormones (chemicals that control the way certain cells or organs work in the body).

Pathology

The science or the study of the origin, nature, and course of diseases.

Phlebotomy

the act of drawing blood either for testing or transfusion. Phlebotomists collect blood primarily by performing venipuncture and, for collection of minute quantities of blood, fingersticks. Blood may be collected from infants by means of a heel stick. Specially trained phlebotomists collect arterial blood samples from the radial or ulnar arteries near the wrist.

Prognosis

A statement about the likely outcome of disease in a particular patient.

Scan

A study using x-rays to produce images of internal body organs.

Staging

The stages that describe how far a cancer has progressed, based on the size of the primary tumor and on whether and where it has spread.

Thrombocytopenia

An abnormally low number of platelets due to disease, reaction to a drug, or toxic reaction to treatments.

Tumor

A lump, mass or swelling. A tumor can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
